Western countries criticize China for its treatment of Tibetans, Uyghurs and dissidents  

GENEVA — During the Universal Periodic Review (UPR) focusing on China, the Western nations pressed China on its human rights violations against Tibetans, Uyghurs, and dissidents and insisted it annul the national security law in Hong Kong,  Associated Press reports.

Chen Xu, The Chinese ambassador in Geneva, amplified the progress achieved in poverty alleviation and assured that religious freedom is guaranteed among all people groups.

More than 160 countries participated in the discussion, allowing each country to speak for 45 seconds. China’s delegation had 70 minutes to present its case.

Some NGOs and the US have accused China of genocide against Uyghurs. During China’s last review held in 2018, the United States and other countries brought up the treatment of Uyghurs. 

During the weeks preceding the Periodic Review, Beijing was vigorously trying to persuade member countries to side with its propaganda.
