2022 Tucholsky Prize awarded to Imprisoned Uyghur author Parhat Tursun

Swedish PEN announced that it would be giving Uyghur writer Parhat Tursun the Tucholsky prize, named after the German writer Kurt Tucholsky who fled Nazi Germany for Sweden. It is awarded annually to a persecuted or exiled writer, with previous recipients including Salman Rushdie and Belarusian Nobel laureate Svetlana Alexievich.






US requests UN Rights Council to discuss China’s human rights violations against Uyghurs

In response to a report that warned of potential crimes against humanity, the United States on Monday requested that the UN Human Rights Council discuss the issue of rights breaches in the so-called Xinjiang Uyghur Autonomous Region (that Uyghurs call East Turkistan).


United States submitted the first-ever draft resolution to the highest UN rights body with a China-specific mandate, requesting it to ‘conduct a debate on the situation of human rights in Xinjiang Uyghur Autonomous Region’ during the meeting of the council.






Olaf Scholz urges China to implement UN recommendations on Uyghur human rights

“The former High Commissioner for Human Rights briefed us about the situation of the Uighurs in Xinjiang a few weeks ago. China should implement the High Commissioner’s recommendations. That would be a sign of sovereignty and strength and a guarantee of change for the better.”






Uyghur survivors stage hunger strike outside White House

On Monday, September 19, a group of Uyghur camp survivors started a hunger strike in front of the White House in Washington DC in

 solidarity with Uyghurs starving in the Chinese-occupied East Turkistan

 due to China’s zero covid policies. The protesters want to draw 

attention to the Uyghur genocide and call for the United Nations to 

introduce a resolution on Uyghur human rights. They ask the United 

States to hold China accountable for the Uyghur genocide as the world 

leaders gather for a UN summit in New York.






Western nations at UNHRC indecisive about establishing commission to investigate China’s human right 


 Sept 21, 2022



 states are calculating whether to call for an independent commission to

 investigate human rights abuses against the Uyghurs by China, the Guardian reports. If established, it would test the amount of Chinese influence at the UN. 


The previous UN human rights commissioner, Michelle Bachelet, issued a 

report on Human rights abuses against the Uyghurs on Aug 31st – her last

day in the office.
