Op-Ed: A Call to Hold Thailand Accountable for Its Role in Uyghur Deportations and Genocide Whitewashing

Thailand is complicit in China’s crimes against humanity through its deportation of 40 Uyghur refugees to China on February 27, 2024, after detaining them illegally for 11 years. This follows its 2015 forced deportation of 109 Uyghur refugees, condemning them to persecution, imprisonment, and possible execution.

In response to global outrage over its recent deportations, Thailand, on March 18, launched a staged tour to the Uyghur homeland and began a global propaganda campaign on behalf of the communist regime in Beijing, aimed at deflecting criticism by whitewashing and denying China’s atrocities, including genocide and crimes against humanity against the Uyghur people.

Thailand has justified these actions as necessary to “safeguard its interests.” This defense is indefensible. By aligning itself with China’s genocidal regime, Thailand has betrayed its international responsibilities, global communities, and the Uyghur people. The time has come for decisive consequences. Thailand’s actions have not only shown contempt for the Uyghur people but have also perpetuated discrimination and hatred against them worldwide.

A Call to Action for Uyghurs and Global Advocates

The Uyghur community, alongside our allies, must mobilize to ensure Thailand faces repercussions for its complicity. We propose the following measures:

  1. Expose Thailand’s Role: Thailand’s actions must be relentlessly highlighted on the global stage. Through media campaigns, international forums, and advocacy networks, we will shine a spotlight on Thailand’s involvement in Uyghur deportations and genocide denial, ensuring its reputation reflects its moral failures.
  2. Push for Economic Sanctions: Governments committed to human rights must impose targeted financial and trade sanctions on Thailand. The Uyghur diaspora and supporters should lobby for these measures, leveraging economic pressure to compel a policy shift.
  3. Restrict Visas for Thai Officials: As the U.S government, the international community should bar entry to Thai officials who have authorized or facilitated Uyghur deportations and propaganda efforts. Such visa restrictions will signal that complicity in genocide carries personal accountability.
  4. Organize Protests: Uyghurs and human rights defenders must stage demonstrations outside Thai embassies, government buildings, and international events where Thai representatives are present. These protests will keep Thailand’s crimes in the public eye and demand justice.
  5. Boycott Thai Tourism: Tourism fuels Thailand’s economy. We urge Uyghurs, allies, and conscientious travelers to boycott travel to Thailand and encourage others to follow suit. A sustained decline in tourism revenue will underscore the cost of Thailand’s actions.
  6. Isolate Thailand Diplomatically: Nations that uphold human rights must reevaluate their relationships with Thailand, isolating it diplomatically until it ends its role as China’s accomplice. This includes reconsidering trade agreements, partnerships, and participation in multilateral organizations.

A Resolute Stand

The Uyghur people will neither forget nor forgive Thailand’s betrayal. For every life lost, every family torn apart, and every voice silenced due to Thailand’s actions, we will ensure the Thai government faces unrelenting pressure. Justice demands nothing less.

I call upon Uyghurs, human rights advocates, and the global community to act now. Thailand’s complicity must not go unchallenged. Together, we will hold this nation accountable until it ceases to abet China’s genocide and respects the dignity of the Uyghur people.
