Enes Freedom: NBA Termination Linked to Criticism of China’s Uyghur Genocide

Former NBA star Enes Kanter Freedom testified before Congress earlier this week, asserting that he has been “blacklisted” from the NBA due to his outspoken criticism of China’s persecution of the Uyghurs and the league’s association with the Chinese government.

Enes Kanter Freedom, a former NBA player, has gained prominence for raising awareness about the plight of Uyghur Muslims in China. His criticism of China’s actions in Tibet, Uyghurstan, and Hong Kong, and its threats towards Taiwan resulted in repercussions within the NBA.

Freedom faced a shift in support when he spoke out against China. Using his platform, he incorporated political messages in his shoes, following other players’ lead. However, a teammate warned him that such actions could end his basketball career.

Unfortunately, this prediction came true when he was released from the NBA in February 2022. Although the NBA Commissioner denied any connection between Freedom’s activism and his departure, the former basketball star expressed disappointment when his teammates didn’t reach out to him due to concerns about their endorsement deals.

Nonetheless, Freedom remains committed to advocacy and his ability to effectively communicate has sparked discussions about his potential involvement in politics. He emphasizes the nonpartisan nature of human rights and the importance of standing up for what he believes in. Looking ahead, Freedom envisions a future in warm and relaxed Florida, providing a contrast to the challenges he has faced. His dedication to shedding light on the Uyghur genocide serves as a powerful reminder of ongoing human rights struggles globally.
