Two House lawmakers are jointly nominating the Uyghur Human Rights Project (UHRP) and the Campaign for Uyghurs to receive the Nobel Peace Prize for their work on the Uyghur genocide committed by the Chinese government, New York Post reports.

In a letter to the Norwegian Nobel Committee, Reps. Tom Suozzi (D-NY) and Chris Smith (R-NJ), that co-chair the bipartisan Congressional Uyghur Caucus). Both groups have raised awareness of Beijing’s genocidal abuses against Uyghurs and other minority groups in ‘Xinjiang’. (Uyghurs prefer to call their Uyghuristan or East Turkistan.)

Both lawmakers stressed the gravity of the abuses, that include documented mass detention, sexual violence, torture, forced labor, forced abortions, and sterilization of Uyghur women.

The lawmakers noted that despite facing retaliation and intimidation from the CCP, neither organization has chosen to remain silent.
