Uyghur Blogger Esqer Gheni Arrested

Korla City, Uyghur Homeland (April 22, 2024) – In a recent development, prominent Uyghur blogger Esqer Gheni, founder of Bilik Salon, has been arrested by Chinese authorities.

Gheni, known for his collaboration with Dr. Tursunjan Nurmemet, a Uyghur PhD educated in the United States and former faculty member at China’s prestigious Tongji University, has been actively engaged in blogging and translating works to support the Uyghur community since 2017.

The news was confirmed by Uyghur activist and linguist Abduweli Ayup, who is also a contributor to Uyghur Times Uyghur edition and who first shared the news on social media. Abduweli Ayup told Uyghur Times that he confirmed the news from a trustworthy source in the Uyghur homeland.

One of their notable endeavors includes translating books on trauma and recovery, aiming to provide encouragement and support to fellow Uyghurs. Their efforts have been widely appreciated within the community.

The exact reasons behind Gheni’s arrest remain unclear, but concerns are growing over the increasing crackdown on Uyghur intellectuals and activists by Chinese authorities.
