Former Turkish Prime Minister Urges Government to Save Uyghurs in Thai Prisons

Ahmat Davutoğlu (Chairman of the Future Party and Former Prime Minister of the 62nd, 63rd, and 64th Turkish Republic Governments) urged Turkish Foreign Minister Hakan Fidan to take immediate action to stop the deportation of Uyghur detainees by the Thai government, calling it a “humanitarian crisis.”

He said: “48 of our Uyghur Turk brothers detained in Thailand are facing the danger of being extradited to China. If they are extradited, they will inevitably face grave consequences such as torture, imprisonment, and severe human rights violations. This issue is not just a test for Uyghur Turks, but a test of human dignity and international conscience. As the Republic of Turkey, we have always stood by the oppressed throughout our history and never hesitated to defend human rights and justice. Now it is time to take action again! While even Marco Rubio, who was nominated by US President Trump for the State Department, has reacted to this situation, it is unacceptable for Turkish foreign affairs to remain silent! I call upon our Minister of Foreign Affairs Mr.

@HakanFidan, our Beijing Ambassador Mr.@ihakkimusa, and all our authorized institutions and the international community to take immediate action to stop this humanitarian drama. Where consciences remain silent, humanity loses!”

The Turkish government has yet to issue a public statement on the matter and has faced criticism from the Uyghur diaspora for its silence on the Uyghur genocide, even as it joined other nations at the U.N. in a joint statement urging China to adhere to U.N. recommendations on respecting Uyghur human rights.
