JA Solar Exits Uyghur Homeland Amid Forced Labor Allegations

China’s solar panel giant JA Solar has officially exited the Uyghur homeland following mounting scrutiny over its potential ties to forced labor in the region.

The move comes amid growing international pressure on solar companies linked to the exploitation of Uyghurs in state-run labor camps. Sources familiar with the matter told media outlets that JA Solar has completely withdrawn from any business activities in the Uyghur region, citing reputational concerns. The company reportedly sold a special purpose vehicle tied to a local solar project years ago and never established manufacturing operations in the region.

In January 2025, the U.S. Department of Homeland Security blacklisted JA Solar’s subsidiary, Donghai JA Solar Technology Co., under the Uyghur Forced Labor Prevention Act. An independent investigation by the Solar Stewardship Initiative later confirmed the entity ceased operations in 2018 and now sources materials from Southeast Asia and the U.S.

JA Solar’s exit follows a broader reckoning in the solar industry, as developers in the UK and elsewhere move away from suppliers linked to Uyghur forced labor. British officials, including Energy Secretary Ed Miliband, have pledged to cleanse supply chains of such abuses, while Parliament previously voted to recognize China’s treatment of Uyghurs as genocide.

JA Solar has not commented publicly on its withdrawal.
