Uyghurs in Germany demonstrated to boycott the 2022 Beijing Winter Olympic Games to be held next month in China, Haberler.com reported.
The World Uyghur Congress had summoned hundreds of people to protest the Beijing Winter Olympic Games in front of the historic Brandenburg Gate in the capital Berlin. Next, they marched to the German Ministry of Foreign Affairs.
The demonstrators carried banners that read ‘No Beijing 2022’ and ‘China shouldn not be rewarded for its crimes’. Demonstrators chanted slogans such as ‘Freedom for the Uyghurs’, ‘Stop the Genocide’ and ‘Close the concentration camps’.
In his speech in front of the Ministry of Foreign Affairs, World Uyghur Congress President Dolkun Isa spoke about China’s repression against the Uyghurs in the Xinjiang Uyghur Autonomous Region (Uyghuristan / East Turkistan).
Isa expressed his disappointment that the International Olympic Committee (IOC) had not given up on having the winter Olympics in China, despite China’s grave human rights violations. ‘Governments, sponsors, national Olympic committees, television channels, athletes, IOC, and everyone who believes in human rights and condemns the genocide, should not participate in the Olympic Games.’ Isa continued. ‘Instead, they should boycott them.’
Reminding that seven countries had already announced a diplomatic boycott of the 2022 Beijing Winter Olympics, Isa asked Germany and the European Union (EU) to participate in this boycott.
Meanwhile, two demonstrators handed a banner to the Ministry of Foreign Affairs official. The gesture symbolized the 54,745 signatures that the organization had collected online to boycott the Beijing 2022 Olympic Games.
