The golden year of Uyghur Advocacy: Major Uyghur News of 2021

In 2021, significant events unfolded for the Uyghur community, shedding light on the atrocities and crimes committed by the Chinese government against them. Western democracies not only recognized the Uyghur genocide but also took collective actions against forced labor and genocide, signifying a turning point in the fight for justice.

In this article, I have examined the major events that have taken place regarding the Uyghurs, organizing dozens of the most significant developments pertaining to the Uyghur community and China.

1-New York Times: U.S. Says China’s Repression of Uighurs Is ‘Genocide’

The finding by the Trump administration is the strongest denunciation by any government of China’s actions and follows a Biden campaign statement with the same declaration.

2-Retuers: Canada’s parliament passes motion saying China’s treatment of Uighurs is genocide

OTTAWA (Reuters) – Canada’s parliament passed a non-binding motion on Monday saying China’s treatment of the Uighur Muslim minority in the Xinjiang region constitutes genocide, putting pressure on Liberal Prime Minister Justin Trudeau’s government to follow suit.

President Biden on Thursday signed into law the Uyghur Forced Labor Prevention Act, a bipartisan bill that bans imports from China’s Xinjiang region unless the importer can prove they were not made with forced labor.

The new White Paper on Export Control, which Beijing released on Wednesday (December 29th), states that China will curb exports of dual-use technology, military products, nuclear items for the sake of its national security. Dual-use goods, technologies, and services are suitable for civilian or military purposes. The document is China’s first white paper on export controls and comes around one year after the implementation of the PRC Export Control Law in December 2020.
