China’s state media, Xinhua News, reported last week that the Standing Committee of the Political Bureau of the CPC Central Committee held a meeting on November 10 to listen to the report on the prevention and control of Covid. The communist leadership wants to study and deploy twenty measures to optimize the prevention and control work. CPC Central Committee General Secretary Xi Jinping presided over the meeting and delivered an important speech, Xinhua News says.
According to the news, the meeting decided that “it is necessary to fully and accurately implement the decisions and arrangements of the CPC Central Committee and unswervingly adhere to the “people first, life first”-principle. The leaders must strictly implement the general strategy of “external defense against imports and internal defense against rebound”. It must unswervingly implement “a strict clearing policy”.
The zero-covid policy has been controversial and very unpopular among the Chinese people. Many have suffered from a lack of medical and food support during the months-long lockdown in big cities. Experts said the Chinese zero-covid policy is not scientific to imposing lengthy lockdowns.
Uyghurs have been under draconian lockdowns for more than 100 days, and the Uyghurs in the diaspora have been gravely concerned.
The Chinese government, however, explained why it is necessary to continue its zero covid policy:
“Our country has a large population, many vulnerable groups, unbalanced regional development, and insufficient medical resources. The epidemic situation in some areas still has a scale. Affected by the mutation of the virus and climatic factors in winter and spring, the scope and scale of the epidemic may further expand. The prevention and control situation continues to be severe. It is necessary to maintain strategic focus and accurately do a good job in scientific epidemic prevention and control”.
Mehmet Tursun, an Uyghur intellectual residing in Washington DC, told the Uyghur Times that the ill-intention of the inhumane Chinese covid policies in the Uyghur homeland might pose more dangerous threats than even concentration camps. The lives of Uyghur people are in more danger than ever.
