Uyghur Times is an independent media organization reporting on China and Central Asia, with a focus on Uyghur human rights, cultural life, and diaspora communities.
Founded in 2018 by Uyghur scholar and human rights advocate Tahir Imin Uyghurian, Uyghur Times is a self-funded, community-oriented, volunteer-driven initiative, independent of any political party or government.
Principles and Team
Uyghur Times adheres to strict journalistic standards, following internationally accepted reporting and source-verification practices.
Uyghur Times is a volunteer-driven organization bringing together a team of intellectuals with expertise in journalism, politics, history, literature, and language. Guest contributors feature prominent Uyghur scholars and activists from across the global diaspora.
As Mr.Tahir Imin said: “ These volunteer professionals are the most honest voice of Uyghur people, despite the great pressure they are facing and lack of any social recognition and financial benefit, they are passionate and dedicated to work on behalf of Uyghur people”
Uyghur Times has documented China’s ongoing policies toward Uyghurs and numerous human rights cases, including the destruction of Uyghur homes and cultural sites, the detention and arrest of Uyghur individuals, and acts of transnational repression targeting Uyghur groups and individuals across the globe.
Uyghur Times also covers developments within the Uyghur diaspora, including cultural and identity preservation, community-building efforts, political and advocacy activities, refugee issues, and Uyghur literature and music.
Uyghur Voices
Uyghur Times provides an open and inclusive platform for diverse voices within the global Uyghur diaspora, representing a wide range of perspectives—from conservative to liberal—and spanning communities in Western countries, Central Asia, and the Middle East.
Impact
Reporting by Uyghur Times has been cited and referenced by international media outlets, academic research, and human rights advocacy organizations.
Target of Cyber Attacks
As a platform exposing Chinese human rights abuses and disinformation campaigns while amplifying Uyghur voices, Uyghur Times has been subjected to repeated cyberattacks attributed to Chinese actors, targeting its website and digital infrastructure over the years.Nearly all volunteers, including founder Tahir Imin Uyghurian, have been personally affected by China’s genocide, with family members imprisoned or disappeared into its extensive camp system, grounding our work in lived experience and deep commitment to the Uyghur community.
