Uyghur Student Kamile Wayit Released After Completing Three-Year Sentence
1 min readFollowing the tragic fire disaster that occurred in Urumqi in 2022, Kamile Wayit, a student who participated in the “White Paper Movement” that spread across China in opposition to COVID restrictions and shared a related video on social media, was accused of the crime of “inciting extremism” and sentenced to three years in prison.
Kamile Wayit was released on December 28 after completing her sentence.
In a Chinese-language statement issued today by Amnesty International, it said: “This signals the end of her days of unjust treatment. We call on the authorities to grant her full freedoms, including the ability to travel freely across national borders and to return to school to continue her studies. Amnesty International sincerely thanks all the supporters who signed petitions and raised their voices in support of Kamile. Your actions are of great importance.”
Human rights advocates, including Amnesty International and other organizations, have long been advocating for the release of Kamile Wayit through petitions, urgent actions, and international campaigns since her detention in 2022.
