A 23-year-old Uyghur man, Iskender Mahmut (also known as Maihemuti Yisikandaier or similar transliterations from Uyghur/Chinese), tragically lost his life in a targeted shooting in the Dutch town of Oss, Netherlands.

The tragic shooting death of 23-year-old Uyghur man Iskender Mahmut (also known as Maihemuti Yisikandaier or similar transliterations) occurred on the evening of Monday, February 10, 2025, in the Dutch town of Oss, Netherlands. The incident took place on Professor Regoutstraat, specifically in the storage basement (kelderbox or berging) area beneath an apartment complex.

Residents reported hearing multiple gunshots around 10:30 PM, prompting an immediate emergency response. Police and emergency services arrived to find the victim with fatal gunshot wounds; despite efforts, he succumbed to his injuries at the scene.Dutch authorities have since identified him publicly and released his photograph in appeals for information, as part of ongoing investigations broadcast on programs like Opsporing Verzocht. The victim was of Uyghur descent, born in China, and had sought asylum or residence in Europe after initially emigrating to Turkey before eventually arriving in the Netherlands. His immigration and asylum journey involved stays in several locations across the country, including Biddinghuizen, Ter Apel (a well-known asylum seeker center), Enschede, Oss, and Oosterhout. Details about his precise movements—particularly during January and February 2025—remain limited and unclear to investigators, who are actively trying to reconstruct his activities, contacts, and whereabouts in the weeks and days leading up to the shooting.The motive behind the fatal shooting is still under investigation, with no suspects publicly named and the circumstances described as unclear. Police stress that this was not a random incident and are eager to speak with anyone who may have known Iskender/Maihemuti, even casually. This includes individuals who:

  • Provided him with temporary shelter or housing
  • Saw him in the period before February 10
  • Had any social, community, or incidental contact with him
  • Witnessed anything suspicious on or around Professor Regoutstraat that evening
  • Have information about possible disputes, associations, or events that could explain what led to the shooting
