Thousands from the Hong Kong, Tibetan, Uyghur, Ukrainian, and other diaspora communities gathered in London today to protest against the proposed Chinese “super embassy” at the Royal Mint Estate. Demonstrators voiced concerns over potential transnational repression and urged the UK government to halt the project.
China purchased the Royal Mint Court property in 2018. The site sits close to sensitive fibre-optic cables that carry communications to and from financial institutions in the City of London and would allow Beijing to house thousands of staff under one roof, replacing its current, smaller embassy elsewhere in the capital.
An architect involved in the project disclosed details including a tunnel linking two former Royal Mint buildings, basement facilities, and accommodation for hundreds of staff.
“Today, we protested outside the proposed Chinese Mega Embassy at the @RoyalMintEstate,” wrote Stop Uyghur Genocide, a London-based Uyghur group, on X. “The turnout was massive, with incredible unity from all parties and groups persecuted by the CCP. A powerful stand, and a powerful message.”
Protesters continue to call on UK authorities to reject the proposal, warning of potential risks to activists and dissidents in exile.
