Rushan Abbas, Chair of the Executive Committee of the World Uyghur Congress, the Executive Director of campaign for Uyghurs, launched her memoir Unbroken: One Uyghur’s Fight for Freedom this week at the Hudson Institute, spotlighting the Chinese government’s continued repression of Uyghurs and her personal fight to free her sister, Dr. Gulshan Abbas.
The event featured a panel discussion with Olivia Enos of the Hudson Institute, Damon Wilson of the National Endowment for Democracy, and Dean Baxendale of Optimum Publishing. They reflected on Abbas’s personal story, the global response to the Uyghur genocide, and the need for international solidarity.
U.S. Representatives Young Kim, Tom Suozzi, and Joe Wilson delivered remarks affirming bipartisan support for the Uyghur cause and the need to hold the Chinese regime accountable for its crimes.
Hudson Institute President John Walters opened the event by welcoming guests and emphasizing the importance of raising awareness and taking action against China’s human rights abuses.
Rushan Abbas also shared her reflections on her book on X:”This book carries the voices of my people, woven from grief, anchored in resolve, and lifted by hope. It traces three generations of our continuous fight for freedom, including excerpts from my late father’s unpublished memoir about surviving Mao’s Cultural Revolution. Each page bears the weight of pain and resilience I’ve carried since my sister, Dr. Gulshan Abbas, was unjustly detained by the Chinese regime simply for being my sister. But it also stands as a testament to our unbroken will and spirit in the face of tyranny. I hope Unbroken fosters a deeper understanding of the truth and compels action against today’s greatest threat to democracy and freedom.”
