On December 28, 2025, Rebiya Kadeer, spiritual leader of the Uyghur people and internationally recognized human rights advocate, met with Shovchid Temtsel, Chairman of the Great Khural of Southern Mongolia, at the Uyghur Center in Fairfax, Virginia, USA. The meeting focused on the worsening human rights situations faced by Uyghurs in East Turkestan and Mongols in Southern Mongolia and explored ways to strengthen international cooperation and advocacy.
Rebiya Kadeer highlighted the ongoing system of internment camps, forced labor, family separations, cultural and religious suppression, language restrictions, and population control policies in East Turkestan, stressing that these practices meet criteria outlined in the UN Convention on the Prevention and Suppression of the Crime of Genocide. She called on the international community to take concrete action rather than remain silent.
Chairman Temtsel outlined the systematic oppression of Southern Mongols, including violations of language, land, and cultural rights, noting strong parallels with the Uyghur experience and the Chinese government’s assimilationist policies.
The two leaders agreed on the urgent need to exchange information, coordinate advocacy efforts in international forums, and continue human rights diplomacy to address shared challenges. The meeting was attended by Turmuhammad Hashim, Chairman of the Japan Uyghur Federation, and Tsetseg, Chairman of the Youth Committee of the Southern Mongolian Great Khural.
The discussion underscores ongoing international legal attention to forced labor and human rights abuses, including measures such as the 2021 U.S. Uyghur Forced Labor Prevention Act (UFLPA), which bans imports of goods produced under coercion in East Turkestan.
Both sides agreed on the importance of strengthening international cooperation, information sharing, and diplomatic advocacy on these shared human rights challenges.
Turmuhammad Hashim, Chairman of the Japan Uyghur Federation , attended the meeting and gave a brief update on the situation of Uyghur human rights activities in Japan and current Japan-China relations. Tsetseg, Chairman of the Youth Committee of the Southern Mongolian Great Khural,
also attended the meeting.
