Uyghur kids get scolded and beaten if they speak in their mother language Uyghur in China’s state-run orphanages.

A dialogue between an Uyghur girl aged 6-7 and her teachers who seem to Chinese reveals that Uyghurs kids are not allowed to speak Uyghur and would get scolded and beaten if they do.

Voice of Uyghur has translated the video to English.

The dialogue goes in mandarin.

The Chinese teacher: what is your brother’s name?

The Uyghur girl: I don’t know his name.

The Chinese teacher: why don’t you know your own brother’s name?

The Uyghur girl: Because she didn’t tell me his name.

I don’t know his Chinese name. but I know his Uyghur name.

The Chinese teacher (woman): Uyghur name?

The Uyghur girl: but his Uyghur name is a little strange.

The Chinese teacher (man): strange, hah?

The Chinese teacher (woman): hahaha. so what is his name then?

The Uyghur girl: If I had to say in Chinese, I don’t know.

The Chinese teacher (man): say it in Uyghur then.

The Uyghur girl: what could I do if you curse me if I speak it in Uyghur ? and I would eat sticks, right? (Means get beaten)

The Chinese teacher: how would you come up with eating sticks? the teacher is asking you. the teacher requires you to do so. I don’t curse you for that. because you look, the kids in kindergarten are not allowed to speak Uyghur, right?

The Uyghur girl: right.

The Chinese Teacher (man): now the teacher asks you to speak, then it means the teacher will not punish you for that. say it now.

The Uyghur girl: If I say it, I feel I am ashamed of myself.

The Chinese teacher (woman): hahaha.

The Chinese teacher (man): you feel ashamed?

The Uyghur girl: yes.

The Chinese teacher (man): then your name, is that Chinese name or Uyghur name?

The Uyghur girl: it is a combination of Uyghur name and Chinese name.

The Chinese teacher (man): it is a combined name, right?

The Uyghur girl nodded her head.

The Chinese teacher (man): is your Uyghur name Sarbida?

The Uyghur girl: no, my Uyghur name….is…Sabira…hahaha. ( she seems to laugh at her name)

The Chinese teacher (man): It is Sabira, right?

The Uyghur girl: yes.

The Chinese teacher: so what is your Chinese name :

The Uyghur girl: my Chinese name is Sai bi Re.

The Chinese teacher: Sai bi re, right?

From the conversation, we could also know that the Uyghur kids have been educated with a mentality of hating or discriminating their language and background. The girl laughs at her name and said she felt embarrassed when she was asked to say his brother's name in the Uyghur language.

According to a study released in October 2020 by Adrian Zenz, who is a leading analyst of official Chinese data about Uyghurs"New local government data from Yarkand (Xinjiang) shows over 10,000 mostly Uyghur children in “hardship” due to one or both parents detained.”
