Uyghur Diaspora Mourns the Death of Veteran Activist and Journalist Perhat Muhammed at 61

The prominent Uyghur leader, writer, and journalist Perhat Muhammet has passed away at the age of 61.

Born in 1964, Perhat Muhammet studied at the Faculty of Languages at “Xinjiang” University in Ürümchi, graduating in 1985. He began his career as an editor and reporter at the People’s Radio Station, where more than 200 of his novellas, short stories, and articles were published in various local outlets.

In 1993, he moved to Turkey, working alongside national leader Isa Yusuf Alptekin and playing a central role in founding the East Turkestan Youth Union and its official newspaper, serving as chief editor. Later, after relocating to Germany in 1995, he remained at the forefront of the Uyghur national movement.

Perhat Muhammet was a key founder and editor of numerous Uyghur newspapers and journals, including the East Turkestan Youth Newspaper, East Turkestan Newspaper, Birlik Journal, Uchqun Newspaper, Istiqlal Newspaper, as well as Uyghur Television initiatives in Turkey and Germany.

He was also among the founding members of the World Uyghur Youth Congress (1996), the East Turkestan National Congress (1999), and the World Uyghur Congress (2004), where he served in various leadership and propaganda roles. He was a father of two and a devoted husband.

Condolences

World Uyghur Congress:
The late figure was a shining star in the cause of East Turkestan.
He was a recognized leader, known for his vast experience, his political maturity, his mastery in the field of propaganda, his organizational skills, and his diplomatic prowess in organizational and personal relations. His dedication and tireless spirit of struggle made him an embodiment of patriotism and a monument to self-sacrifice.
He was a hero who faced various storms and difficulties with unwavering, strong will. Regardless of the circumstances, he struggled relentlessly, sacrificed himself, and gave his last breath for the noble goal of the liberation of our homeland, East Turkestan, and the freedom of its people.
He will forever live in the hearts of the people of East Turkestan.

Campaign for Uyghurs is deeply saddened to learn of the passing of Perhat Muhammet, former Vice President of the World Uyghur Congress.
Perhat dedicated his life to the struggle for Uyghur freedom, dignity, and justice. His leadership and unwavering commitment to his people made him a respected figure across the Uyghur diaspora.
His legacy will continue to inspire our collective fight for the Uyghur people.

We are deeply saddened by the passing of Mr. Perhat Muhammed. The work he dedicated his entire life to for the liberation of our homeland and the freedom of our people will never be forgotten in the hearts of our people.

The Uyghur American Association is deeply saddened by the passing of Perhat Yorunqash, a respected member of the World Uyghur Congress and a steadfast supporter of our organization, on September 24, 2025, at the age of 61.
Perhat Yorungqash dedicated his life to the Uyghur cause, our culture, and the advancement of the diaspora. His unwavering commitment to the freedom of our people and East Turkistan’s future was reflected in his lifelong courage and service. His support and counsel to our community will always be remembered with gratitude.
We extend our heartfelt condolences to his family, loved ones, and colleagues at the World Uyghur Congress. May his soul rest in eternal peace.
