Pakistan Amplifies China’s Propaganda on Uyghur Homeland

Pakistan continues to serve as a hub for China’s propaganda, disseminating misleading narratives about the Uyghur human rights situation in Uyghur homeland. Recently, several Western parliaments have recognized the persecution of Uyghurs and other Turkic people in the region as genocide, while the United Nations and the European Parliament have described China’s actions as “crimes against humanity.”

In stark contrast, during a seminar titled “Dynamics of Xinjiang in Pakistani Perspective” on May 18 in Islamabad, Chinese Deputy Chief of Missions Shi Yuangqiang claimed that the Uyghur homeland is experiencing its “best time in history.” This provocative statement was made at an event hosted by the Overseas Chinese Association Rawalpindi, attended by politicians and journalists. Shi asserted that Uyghurs are enjoying religious freedom, dismissing Western reports as “malicious propaganda.”

Shi further praised Pakistan as one of China’s “best friends” and promised increased economic support.

A poignant moment at the event featured Uyghur children lip-syncing Chinese songs, symbolizing their inability to sing their own songs while being forced to perform for an applauding audience of Pakistani VIPs. This act underscored the cultural suppression faced by Uyghur youth, even as Pakistan endorses China’s controversial policies.
