Meshrep and Ming Oy- Uyghur Cultural Workshop Announced in Norway

An announcement beginning with “Come to our Meshrep and Ming Oy!” caught our reporter’s attention. This news was distributed by Uyghur Hjelp, a Uyghur aid organization established in Norway. According to the organization, they plan to organize a Uyghur cultural workshop for children in Bergen from August 15-17.

The workshop aims to teach children aged 15-20 how to perform Meshrep (traditional Uyghur social gatherings), Uyghur literary history, musical performance, Ming Oy (traditional house-building game), traditional Uyghur pattern embroidery on clothing, and handicrafts.

Experienced instructors have been invited for this workshop, including:

  • Ming Oy researcher and artist Nijat Hushur
  • Zulhayat Ötkür, a handicrafts master known for Uyghur cultural research in exile and member of the European Uyghur Human Rights Association
  • Mirkamil Türkel, a master of traditional instruments including tembur, dutar, and satar
  • Abdushükür Muhemmet, a Uyghur literature researcher and poet

This workshop was first held in Berlin in 2023 under the name “Journey to the Past,” and for the second time in Stockholm in 2024 under the title “Meshrep and Ming Oy.”
